I try to think of what foods would seem like a treat during a food shortage, especially if winter set in and fresh food was scarce.
One of my weaknesses is Ajvar/ pindjur/ malidzano. I used to get it at Big Lots for about $3.50/jar. It's high compared to tomato sauce, but a nice treat.
If you're canning, it's an easy blend. It will taste rich in the middle of winter.
Roasted red peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, salt, oil. (Infomercials say the nightshade family gives us arthritis, but heck.)
Grind together, to thickness of dip or sauce.
