The Root Cellar do's and don'ts was created by stonyman002
I found a good book in a yard sale that is a real gem. "20 Basics of Self-Sufficiency". copyright 1980.
Over the next few weeks I'll share bits and pieces that may come in handy for folks collecting forgotten information.

Do.....
Keep fruits and vegetables in small piles, not heaped in large mounds.
Handle produce carefully.
Store only your best-- sound, unbruised and mature.
keep vegetables as cool as possible between harvest and storage.
keep containers several inches above the floor so air can circulate around them.
Harvest storage produce in cold weather when soil is dry.
check stored food often and weed out questionable specimens.
eat them first of feed to your chickens.

Don't
wash root vegetables before storing them.
store stemless squash or pumpkins.
store right on a bare concrete floor.
give root crops or storage fruits large doses of high-nitrogen fertilizer.
feel badly if a percentage of your stored produce spoils.
You're still way ahead growing and storing your own good food.

More root cellar information from another chapter.

beets, carrots, kohlrabi, turnips and rutabagas can be surrounded by straw for longer storage of stored bare for short storage.
avoid storing fruit with potatoes, turnips or cabbage.
apples release ethylene gas, which cases potatoes to sprout.
cabbage and turnips transmit their odors to apples and pears.
