I think a good practice to get into is learning how to ration now. Start now by reducing use of water, etc. Learn how to stretch meals, use less fuel etc.
Calculate how long a roll of toilet paper will last you? A tube of toothpaste, etc.
I did that with toothpaste for one. I dated the 4.5 oz tube with a marker. Unlike what manufacturers want you to think, you do not have to cover your whole toothbrush with paste. At 1/4 coverage, I was able to get PLENTY enough foam to brush my teeth. At 2 times a day, my tube lasted me 3 months!!!
I haven't tried cutting back any further yet, but I think I can. I know we can use baking soda or even just water, but it sure is nice having tooth paste. At my rate of 1 (4.5oz) tube lasting 3 months, that would be 4 (4.5 oz) tubes per person per year.
