So I'm in the process of getting my Master Gardener and Master Preserver certificates this year, and I love knowing others who are into permaculture. This last year we switched our gardening method to Hugelkultur and it's changed my life! We have really acidic soil here (in Western Oregon) since we're in a Douglas Fir forest and wetland. With hugelkultur I basically get to decide what goes into my soil.
For those who aren't aware, it's a layered approach to making raised beds.
From the ground up it's:
Old logs and sticks
Compost
Leaves and grass clippings
more Compost
more grass clippings
A layer of soil
mulch on top
At the end of the season, we build the mulch and compost back up and then it's ready for the next planting.
