I have a 4100 watt generator and a 100 watt solar panel set with a 12volt system with two 145AH 6 volt batteries with a 2000 watt inverter. My Generator and all the solar kit electronics and a spare inverter are kept in my faraday cage. I maintain 10, 5 gal cans of gas and I rotate 2 cans a week by pouring them in my jeep so the gas is never over 2 months old. I did set up my solar one time then I packed it back up and put the solar panels in the closet.
I plan to run my generator for 3 hours a day. that's less that a gallon of gas. I will re-freeze my small chest freezer and use a battery charger to re-charge my batteries during that three hours. My freezer and battery charger will only use about 2300 watts so I will recharge anything else that may need it or do a little cooking then. With the gas on hand I should be good for about 30 days because I may have to put some in my jeep. If it is a major grid down ( like an EMP ) then my jeep won't be needing any gas and there will be plenty of dead cars around to forage gas from with a piece of hose and an empty can. I only plan to use my solar panels when I can no longer get gas .
I didn't want to run my generator after dark because sound travels better at night and the noise from the generator could mask the sound of someone trying to quietly approach my house after dark.
